Suggestions for Child Care / School Settings
*:

Teach/reinforce to children that they should:

  • Sneeze or cough into their elbow if a tissue is not available.
  • Use soap and water after toileting, coughing, sneezing.
  • Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet after toileting needs.
  • Reach out to teachers/staff if they do not feel well, if anything"feels funny".
  • Avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Minimize food handling/food sharing at snack and in- school meal times.
  • Use personal water bottles brought in from home to minimize use of classroom/hallway water fountains.
  • Facilities Management:
  • Ensure classrooms have a fresh air source. (This can range from a state of the art air filtering system to having a window cracked open.)
  • Review in-school health action plans for children with underlying health conditions/asthma.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys, hand rails and doorknobs.
  • Reinforce to staff to wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after assisting children with hygiene needs/changing diapers.
  • Reinforce to staff that washing hands with soap and water is the recommended method for hand hygiene as alcohol based hand sanitizers
have not been shown to be consistently effective against viruses.
  • Review specific recommendations for hygiene/facility cleaning related to Enterovirus-D68 at http://www.nj.gov/health/cd/documents/faq/ev_faq.pdf
  • Review health, hygiene, safety and facility recommendations at http://cfoc.nrckids.org/WebFiles/CFOC3_Book_6-10-14Update_.pdf

*Per review/analysis of all above listed resources/recommendations in relation to the daily workings of a child care/school setting.
This list of suggestions is meant to supplement and/or support, but not take the place of, your agency/district protocols, policies or procedures.
